FAQ

Most Frequently Asked Questions

Laser dentistry is the use of lasers to treat a number of different dental conditions. It became commercially used in clinical dental practice for procedures involving tooth tissue in 1989. Laser dentistry potentially offers a more comfortable treatment option for a number of dental procedures involving hard or soft tissue compared to drills and other non-laser tools.
Dental lasers have many benefits over traditional manual scalpels and dental instruments. These include: minimally invasive and less painful, less damage to the gums, teeth, and other tissues, stitches (sutures) are usually not necessary, faster healing time for most patients, less swelling, discomfort, and pain, less blood loss (lasers improve blood clotting), lower chance of infection (lasers kill bacteria), higher chance for tissues to regenerate than with traditional methods, local anesthesia is not necessary for some laser dentistry procedures, and reduced dental anxiety.
The two main types of procedures used for laser dentistry are hard tissue and soft tissue procedures. Hard tissue refers to the teeth, and soft tissue refers to the gums. Common hard tissue procedures include: cavity detection, tooth preparations and dental fillings, and treating tooth sensitivity. Common soft tissue procedures include: treating a “gummy smile”, crown lengthening, treating tongue frenulum attachment, and removing soft tissue folds.
Laser dental procedures also come with some disadvantages and potential complications. These include: generally more expensive than traditional dental procedures, not all dental procedures can be completed with lasers, can’t treat teeth with pre-existing dental fillings, drills and manual scalpels may still need to be used in combination with lasers, local anesthesia is still necessary for more invasive procedures, and there is always a small risk of gum, tooth, and tooth pulp injuries.
The cost of laser dentistry varies depending on the type and complexity of the procedure, the dentist’s experience and expertise, the location of the dental clinic, and the insurance coverage. In general, laser dentistry is usually more expensive than traditional methods. This is partly due to the cost of dental lasers themselves, which can range from $6,000 to $100,000, whereas a dental drill generally costs $1,000 or less. The use of lasers also requires specific training and safety gear, which not all dentists have.
